Police say two attempted abductions Thursday seem related

ELYRIA --  Elyria police suspect two incidents Thursday afternoon in which an older, white man asked young girls if they needed rides are related.

The first, at 4:38 p.m., happened by the BP gas station on East Bridge Street.

A 12-year-old girl was walking home from school when a white pickup pulled alongside her and the driver -- a white male in his 50s or 60s with grayish hair -- asked  if she needed a ride home, Elyria Police Capt. Chris Costantino said.

The girl refused and ran inside the gas station and called for help.

Not too long later, at 5:15 p.m., a similar incident happened on Melvyn Lane.

Costantino said a white, GMC truck with an older, white driver with grayish hair sticking out from a black baseball cap pulled alongside a group of young girls -- their ages were not available -- and asked each one of them if they wanted a ride.

Residents said the truck had been in the area throughout the day.

"This certainly looks like this is related,'' Costantino said.

Anyone with information on the driver or who sees the truck in question is asked to record the license plate number and contact Elyria police at 440-323-3302.
