Possible threat at Columbia Middle School under investigation

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Department is investigating reports of a possible threat at Columbia Middle School.

According to Columbia Schools Superintendent Graig Bansek, a student on Thursday reported hearing what he thought was a threat made by another student on Wednesday.

Bansek said it was not confirmed what the threat was, saying it was an “unsubstantiated, unconfirmed threat.” However, the district took the report seriously, and the Sheriff’s Department was notified.

Bansek said the student who allegedly made the threat was no longer in the district.

Parents were supposed to be notified at 9 p.m. Wednesday, but because of a server problem, the announcement did not go out, Bansek said. He said the district was planning to send a letter to parents explaining the situation, and the problems with the system have already been addressed.

Bansek said the students were never in danger, but sheriff’s deputies had a presence on campus Friday as a precaution.

“Safety and security is our No. 1 concern,” Bansek said.
