Apple Festival holds closest apple pie contest in 33 years

ELYRIA — After a particularly close competition, three Lorain County residents received awards for the best apple pies.

First place was awarded to Jenny Bliss, of Elyria. Cathy Sharp, of Elyria, received a second-place award and Miranda Nehls, of Lorain, was given the third-place honor.

The pies were judged in three categories — appearance, crust and taste, according to the Apple Pie Judging organizer, Dotti Klimczak. Cash prizes — $25 for first place, $10 for second and $5 for third — were awarded to the winners.

Klimczak, who serves as the Elyria Apple Festival vice president and as a member of Apple Core, said it was the first time in 33 years that there was a three-way tie and the judges had to re-evaluate each pie.

“Today, we’ve had some very good, tasty pies,” Klimczak said.
