Police: Man strips off clothes, threatens girlfriend

ELYRIA — A domestic violence incident ended Monday when a 52-year-old Lorain man stripped off his clothing in front of his ex-girlfriend, threatened to stab her and tried to hide from police behind a tree.

Elyria police charged Charles J. Smith, 52, with aggravated burglary, intimidation, aggravated menacing, violating a protection order, theft and domestic violence after his ex-girlfriend called 911 to say Smith had assaulted her in her home.

The incident began around 8 p.m. Monday when Smith was at the house of his ex-girlfriend, Gina Anderson, in the 100 block of Euclid Street.

Anderson, who has a temporary protection order against Smith, told police that Smith left her house and came back half an hour later when he started to yell at her. Smith had taken Anderson’s keys and cellphone when he left the first time, according to the police report.

Smith threw Anderson’s keys at her and started to push her down and cover her face — suffocating her — and threatening to stab her, Anderson told police.

Smith then started to express suicidal thoughts and ran to Anderson’s bedroom where he stripped naked and laid in her bed, saying after he “gets killed there she will have to live in that house,” according to the police report.

After Anderson called 911 to report the assault, Smith ran from the house wearing pants and no shirt. Police arrived to find Smith hiding behind a tree in Anderson’s yard.

Anderson told police that Smith seemed angry over an upcoming court appearance as well as an outstanding warrant for his arrest. In addition to the charges from the incident Tuesday, police served him with the warrant for a July 24 failure to appear on an assault charge.

Smith was being held at the Lorain County Jail without bond. His next court date is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday.
