Intoxicated grandson charged for swinging at sheriff deputy

EATON TWP. — A 33-year-old man was charged with assault on a peace officer after he allegedly attacked an officer who was checking on the welfare of an elderly woman in the home.

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office was called at 8:37 p.m. Monday to check on an elderly woman who was being cared for by her grandson, Ricky Whitt Jr. The caller told police Whitt had been playing loud music and appeared to be falling down drunk in his driveway.

Deputies arrived to find a broken whiskey bottle in the driveway and loud music playing from a stereo in the garage. After knocking on the door of the home in the 12100 block of Eaton Blvd., Whitt came to the door yelling, “You (expletives),” according to the Lorain County Sheriff’s report.

Police said Whitt slammed a storm door into a sheriff’s deputy. He then tried to punch one of the deputies, and he was taken to the ground and arrested, according to the report.

Police then spoke with the elderly woman, who was in the living room crying. She told police that Whitt had been drinking whiskey all day, and that he was very intoxicated and was scaring her.

The woman’s daughter arrived at the home to take the woman, and Whitt was charged with assault on a peace officer and taken to Lorain County Jail.

During a hearing Tuesday at Elyria Municipal Court, Whitt was ordered to stay away from the home and ordered not to consume alcoholic beverages. A preliminary hearing was set for 2 p.m. Thursday before Judge Gary Bennett.

Whitt has been convicted of aggravated menacing and disorderly conduct persisting in the past.
