Update: Police say two critically injured in crash with stolen SUV

ELYRIA - Police said an alleged car thief and a passenger were critically injured Sunday night after they overturned a sport-utility vehicle taken from a Speedway in Elyria.

The incident started about 9 p.m. Sunday when a man called police to report that a man and woman jumped into his SUV at the Speedway on East Broad Street and took off. He jumped in another car and was trying to trail behind his vehicle, he told police and a 911 operator.

North Ridgeville police Capt. Marti Garrow said the woman was driving the SUV, and they crossed state Route 57 and headed east on Sugar Ridge Road in North Ridgeville, rolling over a guardrail at 39189 Sugar Ridge Road. Both were thrown from the vehicle and found unconscious, North Ridgeville fire Capt. Mike Uhnak said.

They were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where they were listed in critical condition Monday, Garrow said.

The crash occurred roughly a mile from the Speedway. Garrow said he doesn't think the vehicle's owner was chasing after his car.

"I don't think they were close," Garrow said.

Police and 911 dispatchers fielded several calls about the incident Sunday night, first from the man whose vehicle was taken and later from people reporting the crash.

No names have been released as police are trying to discern the woman's identity. Garrow said officers are fairly certain they know who the male in the vehicle is.

"We're trying to contact the (man's) family to confirm (his identity)," said Garrow, adding that both North Ridgeville police and Elyria police are launching investigations into the crash and the theft, respectively.
