ELYRIA — It’s not about golf, although anyone who knew the late Cooper Hudnutt, former publisher of The Chronicle-Telegram, can tell you the man loved to play the game.
He did so weekly with friends at the Elyria Country Club.
Still, organizers of the third annual A. Cooper Hudnutt Golf Memorial tournament at the country club want attendees to enjoy the game while remembering the purpose behind the party.
“Coop was an avid reader who believed in education,’” said organizer Ron Fain of the Buckeye Academy of Golf. “He was well known to support a lot of schools in the area because he believed in what education could do for children.”
Proceeds from this year’s golf outing will be donated to the Cooper Hudnutt Memorial Journalism Scholarship. The fund awards scholarships to exemplary Lorain County high school students who are chosen after submitting an essay.
The four-person scramble outing will be Aug. 8 at Elyria Country Club, 41625 Oberlin-Elyria Road. Lunch to be served 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. Dinner and awards will follow the outing with first-, second- and third-place prizes handed out.
Golfers may participate in a 50/50 drawing, pin shots on holes, a hole-in-one contest for a car, longest drive, longest putt and team skins game.
The outing and scholarship program were started in 2011 after Hudnutt’s death in November 2010.
Hudnutt was also former president of the board of Lorain County Printing and Publishing Co., which operates The Chronicle and various print, radio and online properties, including The Gazette in Medina County, where Hudnutt also once served as publisher.
