Elyria man charged with car break-ins

ELYRIA — A man was arrested for allegedly stealing a GPS from a vehicle after he led police on a chase Tuesday morning.

Mark Streets, 39, of Elyria, was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence, theft and obstructing official business in the backyard of a home in the 300 block of Eastern Heights Boulevard. Police said Streets also was wanted on a warrant for contempt of court on a drug paraphernalia charge.

At around 3:51 a.m., officers received a report that a man, later identified as Streets, was breaking into vehicles in the area. Streets was walking on Princeton Avenue toward Eastern Heights Boulevard, and the caller identified Streets as the man who was breaking into vehicles, according to a police report.

Police said Streets began running from officers and led them on a chase through a backyard. Streets threw a GPS to the ground while he was running, according to the report.

Officers apprehended him and tracked the GPS to its owner on Oxford Avenue. The owner of the GPS checked her vehicle, which had been unlocked, and found her GPS missing.

A witness told police he was smoking a cigarette when he saw Streets enter an unlocked car in the area. He did not see if Streets had taken anything from the car.
