Man dies, 2 others hospitalized in state Route 18 crash

GRANGER TWP. — Two people were hospitalized and one has died after an accident that shut down state Route 18 near Medina this morning.

According to the Highway Patrol, Chad Nelson, 29, of Columbus died.

Gilberto Ralios, 20, was driving a Ford Fusion westbound on state Route 18 at 5:28 a.m. when he went left of center, striking Nelson, who was a passenger* in 1996 Chrysler LHS driven by Eric Kaskevic, 34, of Strongsville.

Ralios and Nelson were flown from the scene to Akron General Hospital, where Nelson died. Ralios' condition was not immediately available. Kaskevic was transported by ambulance to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he is in fair condition, according to the Highway Patrol.

According to the patrol, seatbelts were used, and alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.

*Note: This version is corrected. An earlier version incorrectly identified Nelson as the driver, which is what the Highway Patrol initially released.
