CARLISLE TWP. — A family’s pet cat safely escaped a house fire Monday afternoon.
Carlisle Township Fire Chief Kevin Dembiec said the cat was found hiding in the garage, which had some smoke inside but no fire damage.
Firefighters were called to the house, at 41591 Russia Road, at 3:03 p.m. after passers-by noticed smoke coming from the house. Dembiec said, upon arrival, firefighters were faced with heavy smoke coming from the basement.
“Initially, when we arrived on scene, we were concerned there were residents inside,” he said.
The homeowners, George and Barbara Rossi, were not home, however, nor were the children who stood outside Monday watching firefighters attempt to knock down the fire, which Dembiec said originated on the basement stairs.
Dembiec said the cause of the fire was undetermined and still under investigation, but it caused extensive smoke damage to the home.
The residents are now staying with relatives while repairs are made, he said.
