Man shot and killed on Tattersal Court

ELYRIA — By the time resident James Thorne reached the dying shooting victim Sunday, Thorne said the man was gasping for breath and his eyes had rolled back in his head.

“I laid him back in the seat,” said Thorne, who said he is certified to give cardio pulmonary resuscitation. “He still had a pulse.”

The man, whom police didn’t identify, was shot around 10:40 p.m., according to police spokesman Capt. Chris Costantino. He said police believe they know who the shooter is, but wouldn’t identify him.

Costantino said the shooter ran south on West River and police dogs from the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office were unable to locate him. The man remained at large at 12:40 a.m. today.

Witness Tinerah Lawson said she heard four shots and then saw a white, two-door Chevrolet coupe drive away from a house at Tattersal Court, one house from the intersection of Tattersal and West River Road, North. Costantino, who said it was too early to give a motive, said a few shell casings were found by the house.

“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us,” he said.

Thorne said the victim was a black man in his late 30s or early 40s. Lawson said the victim turned left onto West River and drove north about half a block before striking a street sign and crashing into a field across the street from Scoops & More Ice Cream Emporium at West River Road and Lake Avenue.

At 11:30 p.m., police were inspecting the car, which had at least two bullet holes in the rear window and one in the rear driver’s side window. The front windshield was smashed and the air bag deployed.

After the shooting, Lawson said she saw four people run to the house on Tattersal Court shouting, “You just shot him! Somebody just got shot!” Lawson said the people then ran to the car. The area around the car and the intersection of Tattersall Court and West River Road remained cordoned off for a few hours after the shooting as police gathered evidence and questioned witnesses.
