Bay Village man charged with punching officer

VERMILION — A Bay Village man, who was reportedly running in front of traffic, was arrested Monday for allegedly punching a police officer.

Police said Antonio Fernandez, 20, was stopped in front of Midway Mini Storage after officers received a report that Fernandez was jumping in front of cars on Liberty Avenue near Overlook Drive.

Fernandez appeared to be jumping up and down and yelling profanities near the roadway, according to a police report. When he was approached by an officer, he put his hands into his pockets as if he had a weapon, police said.

Fernandez was checked for weapons, but he would not give police his information, saying only that his name was “Bob Hope.” Police said Fernandez then punched an officer in the face, and he continued to resist arrest after he was taken to the ground.

Fernandez, who police said did not appear to be injured, was charged with assault on a police officer, vandalism, obstructing official business, disorderly conduct persisting and resisting arrest.

Several witness statements were taken after the incident, including from a man who witnessed Fernandez punch the officer, according to the report.
