Teen found dead Friday was shot; police seek suspect

LORAIN — The 17-year-old who was found dead on Lexington Avenue on Friday died from a single gunshot wound to the head, and police are seeking a suspect in connection with the shooting.

Lorain police Lt. Roger Watkins said police determined DeAndre McDowell was shot elsewhere and his body moved to the wooded lot where he was found. He declined to say exactly where the shooting took place, although it was in central Lorain.

Watkins said he couldn’t discuss what police believe led to the shooting, which he described as reckless and not intentional.

Police want to question 20-year-old Antonio Robles, who has been charged with reckless homicide in the case, before releasing further details. Watkins said Robles, who lives in Lorain, is believed to have fled the county.

Watkins said Robles has previous arrests on weapons charges out of Florida.

McDowell was last seen around 6 p.m. Thursday in the area of West 23rd Street and Reeves Avenue, police have said. His body was spotted around 8 p.m. Friday by a man and woman who were driving on Lexington Avenue watching a group of wild turkeys.

An obituary for McDowell said he attended Lorain High School’s Digital Academy and was a member of the House of Praise International Church of Lorain.

He enjoyed music, playing drums, watching movies and working with electronic devices, including sound systems and computers.

“He was a very special young man who loved life and was very loving and affectionate,” the obituary said.

Anyone with information can Lorain police at (440) 204-2100.
