Mother charged with child endangering after kids are found walking alone

ELYRIA — An Elyria mother was charged after her two children were found walking alone on Georgetown Avenue and Rosewood Drive, police said.

Elisha Stidham, 28, was issued a summons for child endangering and her children were returned to her Sunday afternoon after they went on a walk through the neighborhood alone.

Police said the children, ages 2 and 4, were found by three witnesses, who called police.

A man who found the children told police the children walked by his home on Rosewood Drive at 5:43 p.m., and he and his wife called police, following the children to Georgetown Avenue.

Police spoke with the children, who couldn’t remember where they lived. Police said the two-year-old boy was wearing only a wet diaper and jeans. His tennis shoes were too big for him, and he had trouble walking, according to a police report.

Police eventually found the home of the two boys after one of the boys ran to his 11-year-old brother, who was in front of a home in the area.

Police met with Stidham at her apartment and said she appeared to have just woken up. She told an officer that the children “should be playing in the backyard.”

Police said the children had been walking around the neighborhood for approximately 45 minutes, and noted in a police report that Lorain County Children Services would be notified.

Stidham was charged with child endangering.
