BROWNHELM TWP. — One man was killed and another hospitalized after a crash involving three vehicles on Baumhart Road around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Dale Welty, 28, of Vermilion was killed in the accident, which occurred between the Ohio Turnpike exit and Middle Ridge Road, according to a news release from Sgt. Pablo Cruz of the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Elyria post. A northbound Ford F-350 pickup driven by Christopher Dewitt veered left of center and struck the southbound Honda Civic driven by Welty head-on.
Robert Danicki of Amherst said his 17-year-old son Brandon Danicki witnessed the crash. Danicki said his son, who was uninjured, was in front of the Civic and swerved to avoid the F-350 before it hit the Civic.
The collision caused the F-350 to flip onto its passenger side. The Honda was pushed east into a guardrail.
Welty, who was wearing his seatbelt, died at the scene. Dewitt, who wasn’t wearing his safety belt, was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center where he was being evaluated late Thursday. Dewitt was cited in 2011 for not wearing his seatbelt, according to court records.
Dewitt’s passenger, 25-year-old Nicholas Kidd of New London, was wearing his seat belt and received minor injuries.
Cruz didn’t say what caused the crash, which remains under investigation.
