Lorain treasurer Karen Shawver fends off challenger

LORAIN — Democratic Treasurer Karen Shawver decisively defeated challenger Anthony Haslage 1612 to 406, a 80.37 to 19.63 percentage point victory, according to unofficial numbers from the Lorain County Board of Elections.

Shawver, 48, took office in 2010 and said she would soon be announcing new user-friendly programs that would increase efficiency in her office. Shawver, who spent about 20 years in various city government offices prior to being elected treasurer, said her experience and hard work in office had been rewarded by voters.

"People know I'm there to do a good job," said Shawver who said she spent about $4,000 on her campaign. "I'm just excited to be able to serve another four years for the citizens of Lorain."

The Lorain City Democratic Party took the unusual step of endorsing Shawver over Haslage due to his support for anti-union "right to work" laws. "It decimated me," said Haslage, 35, of the endorsement.

Haslage, who had said he would've preferred to run as a Modern Whig Party candidate, said he could only spend about $100 on his campaign because he is unemployed. He said he tried to make up for the money gap by walking much of South Lorain and talking to voters.
