Replacement workers to collect trash on Republic routes

CARLISLE TWP. — Republic Waste planned to resume trash collection today with out-of-state workers and supervisors replacing striking employees, even as the strike was expected to drag into a third day this week.

Dave Kidder, area marketing manager for Republic, said garbage pickup in Lorain, Medina and western Cuyahoga counties is about two days behind schedule this week. And although trash service will resume today, Republic won’t be picking up recycling or yard waste for the rest of the week.

“We’re going to do our best to get as much of the Monday trash off the streets as we can (today),” Kidder said.

But he warned that the workers from other parts of the country won’t move as fast as those who normally collect trash in this area.

“They won’t know where they’re going other than with a map,” Kidder said. “It’s going to be slow.”

Meanwhile, Martin Jay, business representative and trustee for Teamsters Local 20, which represents workers at Republic’s Lorain County facilities, said he’s been told that striking Republic workers from the Youngstown area intend to extend their picket line to Carlisle Township again today.

“We’ll continue to support them for as long as they need us,” Jay said.

Teamsters Local 377, which represents workers at the Carbon Limestone Landfill in Lowellville, have been on strike since last month over what the union contends are unfair labor practices.

Republic officials have said the dispute centers on contract negotiations, which have broken down over the company’s desire to leave what it’s described as the “financially troubled” Central States Pension Fund.

This is the second time this month that Local 377 has extended its picket line to Republic’s Butternut Ridge Road facility, although striking workers have not appeared at the company’s landfill in New Russia Township.

The first strike, which was April 1, pushed trash collection back by a day.
