No one injured in Elyria house fire

ELYRIA — A north-side garage fire at 812 Fairwood Blvd. around 5:35 p.m. Sunday caused no serious injuries.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire within a few minutes of arriving, according to fire Capt. James Cawley. He said investigators are looking into whether wiring for the garage opener caused the blaze, which did approximately $20,000 in property damage and $3,000 in damage to belongings.

Neighbors Luca Palko and Mike Schmittle said they ran across the street and helped resident Cheryl Lemasters, 62, get out when they saw smoke and flames coming from the garage. Lemasters was treated at EMH Elyria Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

Dean Lemasters, Cheryl Lemasters’ son, also was inside the home when the fire broke out. He said he moved vehicles parked in front of the garage at the two-floor brick and wood home before they could catch fire. Four dogs and two cats also were rescued from the home.
