SHEFFIELD — Two men were LifeFlighted early Sunday after the vehicle they were in was involved in a rollover accident on Interstate 90.
According to Police Chief Larry Bliss, the men were westbound on 90 near the French Creek Road overpass at 3:22 a.m. when driver Jonathan Morales Martinez, 20, of Lorain lost control of the Honda Pilot he was driving.
They vehicle went off the left side of the highway, and Morales Martinez over-corrected, crossing back over both lanes of traffic. The vehicle then entered the berm and went airborne before going into a barrel roll, Bliss said.
Passenger Enrique Avilla was ejected, and Morales Martinez was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by Sheffield and Avon firefighters.
Both men were taken to the EMH Avon Medical Center before being flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Bliss said. Morales Martinez is listed in fair condition today, according to a hospital spokeswoman, but the hospital does not have any information on Avilla.
Bliss said the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol and speed are considered likely causes.
Bliss said he believes Avilla is in his early 20s but does not know his exact age because he does not have identification. He added that Avilla is from Honduras and may not be in the country legally. Bliss said immigration officials have been contacted.
Morales Martinez is from Puerto Rico, Bliss said.
