Elyria man shot in chin dies

ELYRIA — Whether the fatal shooting of a city man Saturday was accidental, a homicide or suicide is under investigation by police.

Police said they were called to 101 Carriage Court around 10:10 a.m. Saturday about a man bleeding from the nose, but medics later determined Wesley Blaylock had been shot in the chin. A pistol was found in the home.

Blaylock, 87, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland where he died late Saturday or early Sunday, police Capt. Chris Costantino said. He said Sunday that detectives had not determined if Blaylock committed suicide or someone killed him.

“We’ll do a thorough investigation and find out what happened,” Costantino said

Neighbors said Blaylock was seriously ill and Costantino said there were no signs of forced entry at Blaylock’s home near Chestnut Ridge Road and state Route 57. On Sunday night, there was no crime scene tape, which is often used at homicide scenes, at the home.

The entrance to the home has a wheelchair ramp. A sign on the front window warned visitors to not smoke because oxygen is used in the home.

Neighbor Annette McClain said Blaylock moved into the home with his wife, Lee Blaylock, in 2005. McClain described the couple as quiet, but friendly.

McClain said they were taken care of by their son David Blaylock. David Blaylock and his brother, Ray Blaylock, couldn’t be reached Sunday.

McClain said David Blaylock told her he found his father in his father’s bedroom and didn’t initially realize he had been shot. McClain and neighbor Marge Mountford said they sometimes spoke to Wesley Blaylock when he was out walking with his walker, but hadn’t seen him recently as his cancer had worsened.

“One never knows how much pain one person is in,” Mountford said. “How very sad.”

McClain said David Blaylock told her he suspects his father committed suicide.

“He was just so sick (and) in a lot of pain,” McClain said. “Tired of living, I think.”
