Moss' enjoys serving a 'mob' for lunch

ELYRIA — Moss’ Prime Rib and Spaghetti House was busy Saturday afternoon — a time when the restaurant is usually closed.

Serving a full lunch menu, plus Lenten specials, owner Sandi Laubenthal opened her doors for a cash mob to prove to Elyria that Moss’ is still going strong.

Friends and members of Invest Elyria planned the event to show support for Laubenthal and her restaurant.

“Everyone has been very supportive and nice,” Laubenthal said Saturday as she mingled with customers.

Tom and Laurie Hoerrle, friends of Laubenthal, helped organize Saturday’s cash mob.

“I said, ‘Awesome! Let’s do it!’” Laubenthal said soon after the Hoerrles told her about the plan.

Moss’ is typically closed for lunch Saturdays and opens its doors for dinner at 4 p.m. However, Saturday saw 50 reservations during the lunch hours.

“I really want to thank them,” Laubenthal said, motioning to the Hoerrles.

Laurie Hoerrle, who was wearing a Moss’ Prime Rib and Spaghetti House sweatshirt, said she fully believes in the power of “paying it forward.”

“It’s affordable dining, and the food is very good,” Laurie said.

Laubenthal said opening for the event shows that there is life in downtown Elyria, especially on the weekends.

The restaurant and Broad Street property were to be auctioned in December but when they did not sell, Laubenthal chose to maintain control of the restaurant.

Moss’ also was the subject of a makeover on the Food Network show “Restaurant: Impossible” in October 2011.
