Assistant safety service director resigns for health reasons

ELYRIA — Assistant Safety Service Director Dan Jaykel has resigned from his post, effective Feb. 15.

In a short letter to Mayor Holly Brinda, Jaykel, who is a retired Elyria police captain brought back by Brinda to work in her administration, said he has health issues that prevent him from continuing.

“I truly enjoyed serving the citizens of Elyria, solving problems and working with you,” he said. “Due to some health concerns, I have decided to refocus on retirement.”

Brinda said the plan is to post the position this week for potential applicants and have a replacement in place by the end of March.

Jaykel’s position focused mainly on overseeing the Police, Fire, Building and Health departments.

“With Dan’s guidance, we have been able to successfully strengthen services that impact safety in our community, including the revamping of our Building Department and the new referral process for housing demolitions to the Lorain County Land Bank,” Brinda said. “Eliminating decaying, vacant homes will help eliminate crime and improve property values in Elyria.”

It is unknown whether his replacement will assume those same roles.

Brinda said she will hire the best candidate for the job based on the skills the applicants bring to the table.

In the meantime, Brinda and Safety Service Director Mary Siwierka will divide Jaykel’s responsibilities.
