Elyria Schools: 59 positions, including 37 teachers, cut

Elyria Schools unveiled its $3 million reduction plan Wednesday.

The good news is most athletics, art, music and physical education classes remain intact.

The bad news is the loss of 59 full-time employees including 16 teachers who teach core classes like reading, math, science and social studies. In all, 37 teachers will lose their jobs. The others are those who teach elective, or non-mandated, offerings.

Superintendent Paul Rigda said by making the reductions the district can move away from a projected deficit and actually see $6 million in carryover in 2017.

However, this is contingent on whether the plan unveiled by Gov. John Kasich earlier this month comes to fruition as it will add money to the district's budget.
