Pond death likely accidental

AVON — Lorain County Coroner Dr. Stephen Evans has ruled out foul play in the death of a man whose body was found in an Avon retention pond Wednesday.

Evans said initial autopsy results show minor abrasions on the body of Allen Tibai, the 54-year-old man who was pronounced dead at Avon Emergency Care Center after rescue crews were unable to revive him.

Tibai was walking his dog Wednesday night by his home at The Village of Avon apartment complex, and when he did not return home, Tibai’s wife called 911.

Evans said no other external injuries were found on Tibai, and the minor abrasions would be consistent with someone falling. Tibai had a history of stents, cardiac disease and vertigo, and Evans said he believes Tibai somehow fell into the pond, and his history of illnesses contributed to his death.

Evans is still waiting for results from a pathologist, which may take a week, to determine Tibai’s cause of death. He said investigators have a suspicion the man drowned.

“It was pitch black that night,” he said. “If he tripped, it would be easy to fall into the water.”
