ELYRIA — A car fire around 1 a.m. Sunday at 1444 West River Road N. is being investigated as arson.
The owner of the 1994 Mercury Capri, which police said was fully engulfed in fire when they arrived, said he saw his brother and his brother’s two sons set the car on fire, according to a police report. The owner said he is from Mansfield and was visiting his mother who is hospitalized at EMH Elyria Medical Center with a heart problem.
On Saturday, the owner said police called him and said his brother had accused him of stealing $5,000 from the brother when the owner visited the brother’s home in the 800 block of Rosewood Drive. The owner, whose car was valued at $1,500, according to the report, denied stealing the money. He said he found his car tires slashed around 6 p.m. Saturday after calling his brother to deny stealing the money. Police said the car was towed and stored in a garage to preserve evidence for investigators.
