Commissioners Kalo, Kokoski pass over Tom Williams for board president

ELYRIA — Democratic Lorain County commissioners Ted Kalo and Lori Kokoski have passed over Republican Commissioner Tom Williams as president of the board.

The job typically passes from one commissioner to the next on an annual rotating basis, and Williams was due to take over the role at today’s organizational meeting.

But instead Kokoski, who served as president in 2012, nominated Kalo for the post, saying that Williams has divided the board over the past six months and made them look bad.

“You always try to make us look divided and like we’re against you and we’re not,” Kokoski told Williams.

But Williams said he wasn’t working to undermine the board. He said he presented his opinion, which sometimes differs from his fellow commissioners.

He also suggested the move to deny him the presidency was politically motivated.

“If you want to punish me ...” Williams said.

“Yep,” Kokoski replied.
