LORAIN – The boil alert in Lorain has been lifted after water samples tested negative for bacteria Friday afternoon.

Lorain Water Plant Superintendent Dan McGannon said 13 samples tested Friday were negative for Coliform bacteria, which can make people sick if consumed. McGannon said water samples also had good levels of chlorine, which kills Coliform bacteria.

The Lorain boil alert was scheduled to end at 8 p.m. Friday, but McGannon said the water was safe to drink at 3:25 p.m., when the tests were complete. Another test of water samples will be done to confirm the readings, he added.

Tests at the distribution center confirmed a low level of turbidity, or cloudiness to the water.

Environmental Protection Agency standards require a turbidity of 0.3 or less. McGannon said water at the plant had a turbidity of under 0.1.
