LORAIN — Rescue squads were called to the edge of Lake Erie in Lorain this morning after two men slid down a cliff and were unable to get back up.
Firefighters responded to an area behind the Kayann apartments, at East Erie and Illinois avenues, at 7:09 a.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Livchak.
Livchak said the men, ages 23 and 24, told firefighters the 24-year-old had dropped his wallet and was trying to retrieve it.
He then slipped and fell further down the cliff, bumping his head. He ended up about 30 feet down the embankment with his feet in the water, Livchak said.
The second man went down the cliff in an attempt to help him and was also unable to get back up due to the ice and snow, Livchak said.
Firefighters were preparing to set up a rescue rig when they determined that there was an area just to the east where the embankment was less steep, and they were able to direct the men to walk up on their own, Livchak said.
Both men, who are residents of the apartment complex, Livchak said, were checked out by LifeCare and didn't want to be taken to the hospital, he said.
Livchak said the men were up by 7:25 a.m., and firefighters cleared the scene at 7:41 a.m.
Lorain police also responded, Livchak said.
