Postal Service to redesign Bridge Street drive-through

ELYRIA — The drive-through mail drop-off for the East Bridge Street post office is going to have a different look when it’s rebuilt.

That’s according to David Van Allen, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service in Cleveland, who said postal officials plan to reconfigure the drive-through after a Dec. 1 accident in which a motorist sheared the mailboxes off their moorings after being sideswiped by another driver.

“We’re looking at totally remodeling that area,” Van Allen said. “We want to make it safer with guardrails. If someone had been approaching that area at that time, someone could have been hurt and very badly.”

According to Elyria police, a woman in a white Pontiac Sunfire was eastbound on East Bridge Street about 12:15 p.m. when her vehicle changed lanes and struck a second eastbound vehicle, a Dodge Neon.

The Neon struck the curb, a light pole and the mailboxes, one of which struck a third vehicle driven by an Elyria woman who was in the drive-through lane depositing mail, police said.

The Sunfire that caused the accident sped off.

The driver has not yet been identified or found, according to Elyria police spokesman Lt. Chris Costantino.

The lack of outside mailboxes resulted in a 15 percent hike in foot traffic inside the post office lobby from people being forced to park and walk mail and packages inside, Van Allen said.

There is no timetable on when outside mailboxes will return, Van Allen said. A team from the U.S. Postal Service’s Facilities Services Offices in the Washington, D.C., area will visit Elyria to assess the situation before drawing up plans for remodeling the site.

“They’ll make the determination on how best to reconfigure the drop-off area,” Van Allen said.

Until new boxes are installed, post office patrons may continue to take mail to drop boxes at the Discount Drug Mart on North Abbe Road or downtown, Van Allen said.
