Marion Steele senior modifies Monopoly for Amherst

AMHERST — It may be too late to purchase a Christmas gift, but it’s not too late to buy a piece of the city of Amherst.

Amherstopoly, a board game modeled after Monopoly and featuring Amherst businesses, is available. Proceeds from the $20 board game will go directly to Marion L. Steele High School’s choir members.

The fundraiser was an idea formed by senior Emily Phillips, who was tired of doing the same fundraisers for the choir program. The games were printed by the “Your Town-Opoly” company, and area businesses had the opportunity to purchase a space on the board.

The Chronicle-Telegram has a spot in the game, as well as Electric Rays Tanning. The tanning salon in South Amherst was the biggest sponsor, helping the choir reach the $9,700 needed to print the game boards.

Phillips sold 16 games Thursday night at the Lorain Palace Theatre during the choir’s holiday concert. More than 300 games have been sold so far.

Amherst resident Tony Bangas was one of the first to purchase the game Thursday.

“My son is in the choir, and we wanted to support it,” he said.

Bangas said the game was a unique idea and the family would play it.

Games are available at Mermaid’s Tale and Etc., two shops in downtown Amherst. Sponsors of the game can also purchase the games at a lower cost and resell them, Phillips said.

Those interested can also visit for more information or to purchase the game.

“When we run out they’re gone,” Phillips said. “They’re limited addition, so get them while you can.”

Phillips’s mother, Cathleen Phillips, said she was proud of her daughter’s efforts to spearhead the fundraiser.

Emily Phillips said she received her business savvy from her father, who owns his own business. He helped with the game as well, she said.

“I owe him a big thank you because he drove to Michigan, and he picked up the games for us,” she said.
