Gov. Kasich sends extra $1 million to Ohio food banks

COLUMBUS — The Ohio governor is sending $1 million more in state money to Ohio food banks just before Christmas.

It's the second year in a row that Gov. John Kasich has authorized an additional appropriation for the Ohio Association of Foodbanks to meet the growing demand.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services will distribute the extra money. Its director, Michael Colbert, tells The Columbus Dispatch that even though the recession is over, many people are still struggling to find jobs and feed their families.

The $1 million will benefit more than 3,300 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. It was available from the state's Temporary Assistance to Needy Families fund.
