Man charged after bullet is fired into neighboring house

LORAIN — A 23-year-old Lorain man was arrested after police said he shot a bullet into a family’s home.

At 9:21 p.m. Monday, officers were sent to the 700 block of West 22nd Street for shots fired at a home. Police found a bullet hole in the top of the rear glass patio door and through a front window at the home.

Officers met with the homeowners, who said they heard four shots from their backyard and then glass breaking in their home. A bullet struck the door of a bedroom in which three children — ages 1, 3 and 5 — were with their mother.

No one was injured, according to the police report.

Officers followed the path of the bullet, determining that it had been fired north of the home. Police met with Kyle Smith, 23, who lives directly behind the home. Police said several men were at the residence, and Smith appeared to be intoxicated.

Smith admitted to firing the weapon, according to the report, and said the weapon was inside a drawer in the kitchen.

Smith told police he had the .40-caliber Glock 22 in his hand while he was walking to his porch when he slipped, accidentally firing it. The bullet went through the enclosed porch of Smith’s home, through the garage door and continued into the family’s home.

Police arrested and charged Smith with using weapons while intoxicated, discharge into habitation and discharging a firearm in city limits. Police said Smith had a blood-alcohol content of 0.174 when he was arrested.

Smith had no other felony convictions, according to police.

Police attempted to contact residents at a home across the street potentially in the bullet’s path, but there was no answer, and officers could not determine if the bullet struck that home.

Smith was arraigned Monday in Lorain Municipal Court. He was released from Lorain City Jail on a $10,000 surety bond.
