License renewal notice mystifies dog owners

ELYRIA — Even renowned sleuth Scooby-Doo wouldn’t be able to find the cost of renewing a dog license on mailers sent out to Lorain County dog owners reminding them of their annual responsibility.

This year’s mailers, sent out every year by Lorain County Auditor Mark Stewart’s office, didn’t list the price of dog tags, prompting around 100 calls to Stewart’s office Monday. Other vendors who sell dog licenses also were flooded with calls.

Jason Kelleher, supervisor of licensing, said he first learned of the mistake Saturday when he checked the office email and saw a question about the missing information from a resident. He then looked at his own renewal notice and realized the information wasn’t there.

“It was an error and miscommunication,” Kelleher said.

The auditor’s office redesigned the mailers this year, eliminating the return envelopes that often went unused by dog owners, many of whom renewed in person at one of 20 locations around the county or online, Kelleher said.

In previous years, the mailers included a paragraph explaining the costs, but the information was supposed to be included in a line item listing the owners’ dogs. Kelleher said the information wasn’t on the proofs and no one noticed.

But the cost hasn’t changed. It remains $14 for residents under the age of 65 and $12 per year for those over 65. Dog owners can spend an additional $5 for a special heart-shaped dog tag that contributes money to the Lorain County Dog Kennel’s medical fund.

Kelleher said if dog licenses aren’t renewed by Jan. 31, the cost doubles. He said a note about the prices has been placed on Stewart’s website,, where renewals also can be done.
