ELYRIA — An Elyria man who crashed his pickup truck into a home on Longfellow Street is now recovering in the hospital.
At 11:14 p.m. Thursday, a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 36-year-old Chet McLaughlin, crashed through a home at 333 Longfellow St. According to a traffic crash report, McLaughlin, who was traveling approximately 30 mph in a 10 mph zone, drove off South Glen and through a fence before running into the house.
McLaughlin was unconscious when rescue crews arrived and had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was transferred to EMH Elyria Medical Center and later to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
A hospital spokeswoman said McLaughlin was recovering at the hospital, and he was listed in good condition Friday evening.
The residents of the home appeared to be uninjured Friday night but would not comment.
Police suspected McLaughlin was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the report, and his blood was drawn at the hospital for a test. The results of that test are not yet known, police said.
McLaughlin had driving under the influence convictions in 1999, 2003 and 2005, according to court records.
