ELYRIA — The owner of Moss’ Restaurant, which last year underwent a renovation by the Food Network’s “Restaurant Impossible,” is selling the downtown restaurant and building.
Sandi Laubenthal, who has owned the business for more than 11 years, has hired Chartwell Group out of Cleveland to oversee the liquidation of both the business and Broad Street property. Both are being auctioned off as a package for a reserve price of $134,500.
Laubenthal said in a statement that she thought now was the right time to retire from the business, which she has openly talked about struggling to keep afloat. She said her exit would pave the way for someone with new ideas to carry on Moss’ tradition.
“I am sincerely grateful to the dedicated staff and my two sons for all of their efforts and hard work over the past 11 years,” she said. “I have immense appreciation for Elyria and our family of customers for offering me a place to grow and succeed.”
Mayor Holly Brinda said she is saddened to hear of Laubenthal’s plans to close but is not surprised.
“I wish she could go on a little longer, but I know this is a financial decision for her that was a long time in the making,” she said.
The auction is set for Dec. 19, eand will be at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Middleburg Heights.
The 18,000-square-foot building is three stories plus a full basement. The restaurant occupies the first floor. The second floor is vacant and currently used for storage.
The third floor is a three-bedroom apartment that Laubenthal used as her home.
