Elyria police searching for gas station robber

ELYRIA — A lone bandit made off with several hundred dollars in cash during an overnight robbery of a local gas station.

The theft occurred at the Speedway station at Bell Avenue and state Route 57 shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, according to Elyria police reports, which said the robber was a black male who threatened a clerk, telling him he had a gun.

The clerk told police he opened a door to the gas station-convenience store at 3:01 a.m. for a newspaper delivery driver, after which he remained outside to smoke.As he stood outside the building, a black man walked up and asked him for a cigarette. After the clerk gave him one, the male pushed the clerk toward the front door and told him to get inside, saying he had a gun.

Once inside the station, the man ordered the clerk behind the enclosed booth containing the cash registers and told him to hand over money.

The clerk gave him $374, after which the robber left on foot.Police said the man did not display a gun during the robbery.

The suspected is described as 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighing 230 pounds, with a short beard and wore a black waist-length leather jacket and black knit hat.

The man was said to be in his mid-30s.Police were unable to locate the robber during a search of the area.

Motorcyclist injured in crash on Lake Ave.

ELYRIA — A motorcyclist was treated for what were believed to be minor injuries after an accident Saturday night at Lake Avenue and Lorain Boulevard.

The man driving the motorcycle was said to be about 50 years of age, and sustained what were thought to be minor injuries, according to Herb De la Porte of LifeCare Ambulance.

The man was taken to EMH Elyria Medical Center after the accident, which occurred about 7:15 p.m.

The accident did not involve any other vehicle beside the motorcycle, according to the Elyria Fire Department, which assisted LifeCare personnel in getting the motorcyclist into an ambulance.

No other details of the accident were available.
