Woman suspected in slaying in Mississippi arrested in Lorain

LORAIN — A Mississippi woman suspected of killing her neighbor was arrested Thursday in Lorain at a family member’s home.

Lorain police Lt. Mark Carpentiere said police were contacted by the Hattiesburg Police Department in Mississippi because officers there suspected that Tamira Peoples was in the area.

Lt. Jon Traxler, spokesman for Hattiesburg police, said his officers contacted multiple police departments in areas where Peoples had family, including Lorain. Lorain police Sgt. Robert Brown said officers were told where Peoples might be staying with relatives.

“They checked that residence and, lo and behold, she was there,” he said.

Carpentiere said Peoples had her 3-year-old son with her when she was arrested in the 400 block of West 14th Street on Thursday afternoon. The child was left at a relative of Peoples’ who lived in the area, he said.

Traxler said police believe Peoples shot a mother and daughter in an apartment complex next to her residence in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Police were sent to those apartments at 10:30 a.m. Monday where they found Samina Antionette Gholar, 22, lying near the door of her apartment with a gunshot wound to the head. Gholar died of those injuries, according to Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict.

Gholar’s mother’s name and condition were unavailable. She was found in the parking lot of the complex with gunshot wounds.

Traxler said information obtained at the scene led to Peoples being named as the suspect. Peoples allegedly stole a gray 2001 Chevrolet Impala. The car reportedly belonged to the family of the victims.

Hattiesburg police had been searching for Peoples since Monday. She was reportedly driving the stolen car and it was found at a Lorain business.

Traxler said Peoples, 37, will be extradited to Mississippi to face charges of murder, aggravated assault and grand theft auto.

Peoples was being held without bond Thursday at the Lorain County Jail awaiting an extradition hearing.
