Legion broken into, fifth time this year

ELYRIA — Burglars punched two holes into the walls of the American Legion Post in Elyria and then pried a safe from the wall around 3 a.m. Friday.

A Legion official noticed the damage to the building when he arrived at group’s Ohio Street building around 7:30 a.m. Friday.

The first hole, which was about two feet by three feet, was punched into a wall next to the locked door of the canteen, according to an Elyria police report.

A second hole about the same size was punched through a wall near the entrance to the office and storage room.

Police reported that the burglars then pried the safe from the wall and forced it open.

Police later found a broken glass block window about eight feet off the ground and an unlocked second window with a broken screen that would have allowed access to the canteen area.

Officers reported that a motion detector in the Legion building had gone off around 3 a.m., but police were unable to reach those on their contact list when they got the alarm.

A Legion official told police this was the fifth break-in at the building this year.

The Legion reported that $2,456 was stolen from the safe.

Lorain store robbed Friday evening

LORAIN — Two men robbed the Cells & All store on Broadway around 7:30 p.m. Friday, according to a police report.

The clerk told Lorain police that she went outside to smoke a cigarette and saw a man walk into the store.

When she followed him in, she noticed he was wearing a bandana around his face. She told police the man came around the counter, put his arms around her and guided her toward the bathroom.

Police reported the woman refused to go inside and refused to hand over her cell phone to the man. She finally agreed to put the phone on the floor and not call police. The robber then forced her to lay face down on the floor, picked up her cell phone and dropped it on the floor. He then kicked it across the store, police said.

A second man came out of the store’s storage area and emptied the cash register of about $900 before fleeing through the front door, the report said. The other robber fled out the back door, and the clerk reported hearing a car start moments later behind the store.
