Crushers and Red Cross events to help storm victims

The Lake Erie Crushers have teamed up with Mercy Regional Medical Center and All Pro Freight Systems to host a canned food drive, which will benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

All fans are encouraged to bring canned goods to All Pro Freight Stadium until Nov. 9 to help the victims of the hurricane. The offices will be open and accepting canned goods, Monday through Friday, between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

For every five cans donated, donors will receive two home box vouchers, good for any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday game next season.

The American Red Cross will also host a series of blood drives across Northern Ohio.

According to the Red Cross, Hurricane Sandy forced the cancellation of three blood drives in Ohio, resulting in a shortfall of more than 100 blood and platelet donations. Now that the storm has passed, the Red Cross is asking eligible area donors to make an appointment to give blood or platelets as soon as they are able.

All blood types are needed to ensure an adequate blood supply is available during a disaster, especially type O positive, O negative, A negative or B negative blood.

Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit to make an appointment or for more information.

Upcoming blood drives:

  • Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m. at Barlow Community Center, 41 S. Oviatt St., Hudson.
  • Wednesday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Old South UCC, 9802 Chillicothe Road, Kirtland.
  • Thursday from 1:30 to 6 p.m. at Lakefront Community Center, 1 Bliss Lane Euclid.
  • Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. at Rocky River Civic Center, 21016 Hilliard Road, Rocky River.

The Northern Ohio Blood Services Region also has five donation centers across the region where blood and platelet donors can give. Visit for locations and times.
