Man arrested for stealing gun from Rural King

CARLISLE TWP. — A man was arrested Wednesday after police said he stole a muzzle loader from Rural King and then fled on a bicycle.

Thomas Mack, 56, was charged with grand theft, having weapons under disability, illegal conveyance or possession of a deadly weapon in a school safety zone and using weapons while intoxicated.

Police found Mack in the parking lot of the Elyria High School football stadium around 5:30 p.m. while a game was taking place. Police handcuffed Mack, who matched the description of a man who had stolen a muzzle loader from Rural King, located at 430 Oberlin Elyria Road, earlier that afternoon.

Police found a Traditions Performance .50 caliber muzzle loader, still in its package, under a vehicle Mack walked behind when officers arrived. Mack told police he stole the muzzle loader to “make a quick buck” but later said he took it so he could kill himself, according to a police report.

Police said Mack also admitted to drinking, and officers noted his speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol.

Police spoke with several employees of Rural King who said Mack walked out of the store with a muzzle loader, telling employees that he had already paid for it. He did not use force, they said.
