Lorain rolls out welcome mat for VP Biden

LORAIN — Two days before Vice President Joe Biden is set to visit Lorain for a speech at Lorain High School, the city’s mayor rolled out the figurative welcome mat at a quick news conference at the school.

Moments earlier, Mayor Chase Ritenauer was busy canvassing the city to drum up support for Issue 13, the city’s 0.5 percent income tax, but by 2 p.m. he was standing in the school’s cafeteria publically welcoming Biden to the city. This is the first visit from Biden and comes several months after President Barack Obama spoke at Lorain County Community College.

“This visit shows how critical Ohio and how impactful Lorain will be in picking the next president,” Ritenauer said. “It will be great to have Biden here.”

Ritenauer said Lorain residents should know Obama policies have directly affected the city. Republic Steel is gearing up to bring 449 new jobs online in April, which represents an $85 million investment in the local corporation. Republic is a major supplier to the auto industry, which, without the auto industry bailouts could have suffered greatly. Camaco LLC, another auto supplier, is also adding new jobs at a critical time for the city.

“These are just some of the examples of what Obama has done by investing in America and American jobs, which is not just isolated to Lorain,” Ritenauer said.

The mayor was joined by Councilman Tony Richardson, D-at large.

“Biden being on the ground in Lorain will be a huge morale boost for our city,” he said. “Although we are the 10th largest city in Ohio, we are still small compared to others, but our vote counts just as much as any vote in the country.”

Tickets for the Biden event are still available and can be picked up at all three of the Lorain County Democratic campaign offices — 668 Broadway, Lorain, 5 S. Main St., Oberlin and 1573 West River Road N., Elyria — 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today. Doors to the event open 1:30 p.m. Monday.
