Vermilion to get its water back

VERMILION — Vermilion may begin using its own water again as early as this afternoon, according to Safety Service Director Bob Kurtz.

Kurtz said the Vermilion Water Plant’s clear well has been cleaned and disinfected, and provided that a water sample is normal, the water will be turned on.

Vermilion’s well was found to be leaking Sept. 7, causing the water to have a high turbidity, or cloudiness. That prompted a weeklong boil alert for residents until the city hooked up to emergency water lines.

The 47-year-old roof was repaired by Gateway Tank, which resealed the roof for $54,970. The water well was then power-washed and inspected by Dixon Engineering for $2,030.

Kurtz did not have a cost for the water the city has been paying for, but he said the city should have an estimate next week.

The water that was in the well will be recycled back into Lake Erie after being sanitized.

Kurtz said the switch from the emergency water lines to Vermilion’s water should not disrupt service.
