Man arrested after police chase, struggle with police dog

LORAIN — A Vermilion man was arrested early this morning after he led Lorain Police officers on a chase through the city.

Police were sent to the east side of Lorain at 12:07 a.m. when officers received a call that a Vermilion man was in the area buying a large amount of drugs. Officers found a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle’s description, a green Jeep Grand Cherokee, driving westbound on West Erie Avenue, approaching Leavitt Road.

The vehicle was weaving in the roadway and officers believed the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to a police report.

Officers initiated a traffic stop west of Kolbe Road, but the vehicle drove away, striking a police cruiser, after an officer walked up the car.

Police chased the Jeep, which traveled out of Lorain into Vermilion on North Ridge Road. It then turned in to a corner store’s parking lot, drove through a yard and into a driveway on Baumhart Road.

The driver, identified as Raymond Williams Sr., 51, then fled on foot and was pursued by an officer and police dog Garp. Williams reportedly ignored commands to stop, and Garp caught up with him and took him to the ground.

After a struggle with the police dog, Williams was arrested and taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center for treatment for Garp’s bite wounds. Police said Williams admitted to drinking and said he had also gotten high but didn’t specify which drugs he had taken.

Police found a glass tube, testing positive for cocaine residue, in Williams’s vehicle. A plastic bag of marijuana and a wire mesh “chore-boy” were also found, according to the report.

Police said Williams had six driving under the influence convictions since 1990 and 19 open license suspensions. According to a computerized criminal history, Williams also had prior felony drug convictions.

Williams was charged with weaving, fleeing, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, possession of Schedule II drugs, possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, driving under suspension, possession of cocaine and felonious assault.

He was arraigned in Lorain Municipal Court at 9 a.m. today.
