Repair contract signed for Vermilion water well

VERMILION — The city has finalized a contract with an Avon company to begin repairs on its clear well roof.

Gateway Tank will reseal the roof of the Vermilion Water Plant’s clear well for $54,970. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency approved the contract with the company based on the “completeness of its proposal” and the materials that would be used, Vermilion Safety Service Director Bob Kurtz said.

Vermilion’s clear water well was found to be leaking Sept. 7, causing the water to have a high turbidity, or cloudiness. That prompted a weeklong boil alert for residents until the city hooked up to emergency water lines.

The 47-year-old roof needed repairs before the city could again use its own water.

Kurtz said workers already have begun prepping the concrete Wednesday, and repairs should be finished by next week. The well will then have to be cleaned and disinfected to EPA standards until residents can again consume the water.

Kurtz said the city has not had any problems with its water since a car hit a fire hydrant in Lorain on Monday, causing low pressure in Vermilion’s water lines. He added that the city will update its website when the repairs are finished or if there are any problems during the repair.

“We’re just working to get it resolved as quickly as possible,” he said.
