Lorain accountant indicted on theft charge

ELYRIA — Lorain accountant Richard Zakarian has been indicted on a single felony charge of theft.

Zakarian is already facing a lawsuit from Spitzer Management Inc. that accuses him of not sending payments to cover the auto dealer’s payroll taxes to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and the state.

The lawsuit contends that Zakarian’s company, Benjamin Franklin Payroll Service, was given $753,831.98 between July 2011 and June 2012 to cover payroll taxes.

Zakarian was supposed to deposit $591,586 of that money with the IRS, but only made deposits totaling $24,456, according to the lawsuit. Approximately $186,000 that was supposed to have gone to the state also wasn’t paid, the lawsuit said.

The timeframe in the indictment matches the dates of the lawsuit.
