Lorain slaying suspect fights return to Ohio

Albert Fine refused on Thursday to waive extradition back to Ohio to face a murder charge for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Catherine “Kat” Hoholski, and stuffing her body into a Lorain apartment storage area.

Fine, 30, was arrested Aug. 9 in the parking lot of a Lowe’s store in Lexington, Ky., and has so far refused to willingly return to Ohio. He is being held in the Fayette County Detention Center.

Lorain County authorities must now seek a governor’s warrant to have Fine brought back to the area to answer the allegations against him. That process largely consists of paperwork and proving Fine’s identity.

According to the Fayette County clerk of court’s office, an identity hearing in the case is scheduled for Sept. 13.

Lorain police Lt. Mark Carpentiere said Fine’s legal challenges to extradition can last only so long.

“He’s just delaying the inevitable,” Carpentiere said. “He’s going to be brought back here.”

Hoholski’s decomposed body was found last week at the Tower Boulevard apartment complex where she lived with Fine, the father of her 5-month-old daughter, Jasmine Rose Fine, who was born premature in March.

Residents of the Villas of Beau Monde apartment complex had complained about the smell in the area for weeks. Lorain County Coroner Stephen Evans has said Hoholski had been dead for approximately one month.

Hoholski’s mother reported her daughter missing on July 12, telling police that she last saw Catherine Hoholski on June 28. Jane Hoholski also told police that Fine hadn’t seen her daughter either, although he continued to accompany her to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where Jasmine is being treated.

Carpentiere said Thursday that detectives investigating Hoholski’s slaying have spoken to Fine, but he declined to say whether Fine admitted any involvement in her death.

Police have refused to discuss what they believe the motive for the slaying was or how Hoholski was killed.
