15 Minutes: Get to know FAVA volunteer Darlene Krato

Darlene Krato

Age: 79

From: Kendall at Oberlin

Pursuit: FAVA volunteer

What’s your job?

I’m retired now. I started out in fashion merchandising, then after I got married and had four children — that didn’t work out so well. I worked for a couple of nonprofits and did a lot of grant writing. Since I was working in Michigan, I ended up working for the Michigan State Judicial Council, investigating divorce, family support and paternity cases.

What do you do now?

I volunteer in FAVA — Firelands Association for the Visual Arts — when they have a show like the quilt show that’s going on now, in FAVA and throughout the town. A juried panel makes the decisions on what is hung. I’m on the food and art committees at Kendal. We have an art committee that’s very strong and active. Most of the volunteers that come in here are from Kendal. We do two-hour stints.

Do you create any art?

I do embroidery and crewel work.

Why did you move to Oberlin?

Oh, I like the activities — the music, the different shops, FAVA, the (Allen) Art Museum is terrific, so there’s lots of things to do and at a low cost for a retiree. I considered retiring in Ann Arbor, but it was so expensive, plus there weren’t any continuing-care places there — Kendal is, so if you run out of money they’ll still take care of you. If I went to a concert in Ann Arbor, it would cost you $25 at the very least, and probably more now, but here they’re usually free. Tonight I’m going to the baroque concert at the college — it is $10, but usually the concerts are free. I moved to Oberlin because of the value.

What are the names of your children?

Jenny, Adam, Matthew and Peter.
