ELYRIA — An accident Thursday on Interstate 90 led to a fuel spill and traffic tie-ups, police Lt. Chris Costantino said.
The accident occurred on the Interstate 90 bridge over the Black River. According to Costantino, a Leimeister Crane Service tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound when the right front tire blew out. The semi then reportedly hit a guard rail, and the fuel tank ruptured, spilling diesel fuel on the roadway.
For more than an hour, traffic was reduced to one lane while crews worked to contain the spill. The driver of the semi, Jacob Gierowski, 18, of Medina, was not injured, according to Costantino, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
The Environmental Protection Agency was on hand to help clean up the spill. Costantino said he believes the incident was contained.
“To the best of my knowledge, they were able to contain it pretty quickly,” he said.
