Brassfield convicted of lesser charges in baby's death

ELYRIA – A jury found Charles “Scooby” Brassfield guilty today of involuntary manslaughter and child endangering in the death of his girlfriend’s baby in 2010, but did not reach verdicts on murder and felonious assault charges.

Brassfield, 24, faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced later by Betleski in connection with the May 24, 2010, death of 8-month-old Desiree Wade.

Prosecutors argued during the trial that Brassfield was the only person with the opportunity to cause the skull fractures and other injuries that led to Desiree’s death.

He was babysitting at the time for Desiree’s mother, Ciara Wade, who was at work.

Common Pleas Judge Mark Betleski ordered that Brassfield be taken immediately to jail but ruled he could be released on $50,000 cash bond.
