VERMILION — A Vermilion man has been LifeFlighted to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo after he fell 45 feet down a cliff this afternoon.
Barbara Obermiller, 50, said her husband, Dennis, 60, told her there was a snake in the yard and the last he knew he went out with a stick. She said she went back to cooking and in the meantime missed a phone call.
She received another phone call, and it was her husband who told her "I'm over the cliff out front" of their home at 2265 Claus Road.
Dennis Obermiller's condition is not yet available, but his wife said he had a gash to his head and injuries to his arm and hip. At some point during their phone conversation she said he stopped talking and apparently had passed out. He already had physical limitations that made it difficult to walk, she added.
The Vermilion Fire Department extricated Obermiller from the ravine.
Barbara Obermiller said had it not been for the phone call, she wouldn't have known her husband was in trouble and would have continued cooking assuming he was working out in the yard. She said that after his initial call to her, which went unanswered, her husband also called a daughter who is out of state.
The 5-foot-long snake Obermiller had apparently been attempting to chase away remained visible at the scene as rescue squads worked.
